Education for Underprivileged Rural Children-Smile Foundation (2011-2014)

The ‘Educational Programme for Underprivileged Children’ was implemented to address the poor education of tribal children. It also emphasized on improving the child health and nutritional care. The project became a medium of proper implementation of government schemes towards child education and development. It further gave stress on enhancing childhood development facilities for rural tribal and slum dwelling children in difficult circumstances to enhance their life skills, art and crafting skills through education. Apart from these interventions socio-cultural awareness, health and hygiene and recreational needs of adolescents were addressed.

Project objectives

  • To promote education for underprivileged rural tribal and economically weaker children living in difficult and risk circumstances in the age group of 4-14 and years age group.
  • To provide tribal children in slums the primary level of teaching-learning and education support along with health and hygienic promotion, nutritional support, and promotion of recreational activities towards mainstreaming children for continuing education.

Target area and Children
The project covered 103 children (58 girls and 45 boys) of 03 villages of 02 Panchayats of Ambikapur block of Surguja district of Chhattisgarh. The target children belonged to sociologically and economically poor communities in rural areas. Parents were illiterate and poor. Children did not have access to proper education and health care and recreational facilities.

Activities
The project used some specific strategies to promote children’s education. It established non-formal and remedial centers for better education. The animators visited the parents constantly for counseling them for children’s education and community was sensitized. Teachers were motivated to do their best in imparting the education. Children were motivated to study through co-curricular activities. All stakeholders were consulted and motivated for children’s education. The following activities were undertaken:

  • Educating children for mainstreaming them in education through 5 NFE centre
  • Deputing additional local teachers in the government school for improving quality
  • Regular health check-ups and health camps at school
  • Providing nutritional food supplements for children at school

  • Immediate treatment of children of seasonal diseases
