Improving learning outcomes for Children from the tribal community in Surguja, Balrampur, Koriya, Jashpur, Surajpur and Raigarh districts of Chhattisgarh state (RTE Watch program) supported by UNICEF, Raipur (2015-2017)

Sarthak coordinated the implementation of the project “Improving learning outcomes for Children from the tribal community in Surguja, Balrampur, Koriya, Jashpur, Surajpur, and Raigarh districts of Chhattisgarh state”. Four voluntary organizations which worked under the aegis of Sarthak – Adivasi Seva Mandal, Rajpur, Paras Swayam Sevi Sanstha, Raigarh, Dharohar Vikas Sansthan, Ambikapur and Karma Prashikshan Evam Vikas Sansthan, Ambikapur. This project addressed the gaps in learning outcomes of the children from tribal communities and strengthen the efforts to implement RTE for the children belonging to tribal and other marginalized communities such as Pando, Oraon, Korwa, Manjhi, Kodaku, Cherva, Rajwar, Pahari Korwa, Gond and Baiga communities.
Six districts of Chhattisgarh – Surguja, Surajpur, Koriya, Balrampur, Raigarh and Jashpur were covered by the project. The RTE intervention was an example of a collaborative effort involving the education department, community, parents, and teachers from 114 Primary and Middle schools.

Sarthak worked with 23 schools in Lundra and Lakhanpur blocks of Surguja district independently apart from offering support to four partner organizations. It constantly did liaisoning with the education administration to influence the functioning of schools and to support them to comply with the minimum norms of RTE compliance in schools. It also supported the associate organizations in capacity building and supervision. It facilitated the strengthening of the School Management Committees to become effective instruments of governance. Furthermore, it fostered the process of community mobilization to support the processes of education in villages. Finally it supported the local government by engaging and working with them for the effective implementation of the RTE Act. It made stakeholders accountable for their part to ensure education children, exercising their fundamental right to free and quality education.
